Wavestock is the world’s first ocean centric financial market. We’re creating a new form of financial security backed by marine agriculture stakeholders, helping everyday people invest directly into future food security and the regeneration of our oceans.
When you join Wavestock, you can browse available ocean farms and choose one based on crop type, earnings potential, or other factors. Purchasing securities tied to that farm will provide them with funding to expand their operations, and give you exposure to potential earnings at the same time. Securities can be traded at any time, same as any other financial market, helping you remain liquid in your investment. Throughout the year as farms sell their crop, returns are issued to security holders based on the farm’s output.

In the era of climate change, aqua businesses and marine agriculture have become the fastest growing food sector in the world (World Bank, 2024) while also protecting and restoring our ocean ecosystems in the process. Seaweed, seagrasses and kelps are not only nutritious but also incredibly versatile, extending their benefits far beyond the kitchen.
Cultivating these marine plants and macroalgaes enhances ocean health and fuels a range of new sustainable businesses, making seaweed a true “super crop” with the potential to become a major economic engine in the future.
Carbon
Seaweed farming can sequester significant amounts of carbon dioxide. An acre of seaweed can absorb up to 20 times more carbon than an acre of trees. Globally, seaweed currently sequesters about 1.1 tons of carbon per 2.5 acres per year. The NPO Greenwave states, “There are studies coming out that say if you were to have farms covering 6% of the ocean, You could capture all the carbon that’s currently put out by humanity and feed the planet.”
Food Security
As the fastest-growing crop, as much as 60cm (2ft) a day, seaweed can meet the rapidly increasing demand for sustainable food. Rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and protein, seaweed is an excellent ingredient for vegan meat and supplements, extending beyond its traditional use in salads. Its umami flavor enhances a variety of cuisines. Regular consumption of seaweed not only promotes health but also significantly reduces the environmental footprint of food production, offering a nutritious and sustainable solution. It is able to be grown with zero fertilizer or pesticide inputs that are required for land based farming. Many groups have identified it as an important crop in assuring future global food security (Nature).
Agriculture
Seaweed extracts are being developed into bio-stimulants that, when applied to land-based crops, improve yields and soil health. These bio-stimulants generate only about half the carbon emissions per application compared to chemical fertilizers. Using seaweed biostimulants on 4% of global farmland could potentially avoid up to 1 megaton (one billion kilograms) of carbon emissions annually, estimates The Nature Conservancy (The Nature Conservancy).
Fuels
In search of a cheaper, sustainable fuel source, researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) turned to two plentiful marine resources in Alaska: kelp and fish processing waste. They found that by using existing fish processing plants, Alaska’s kelp harvest and fish waste can be transformed into a carbon-neutral, diesel-like fuel. Studies show seaweed biofuels have huge potential, with a life cycle analysis indicating a net removal of about 961 kg of CO2 per ton of dry weight seaweed, offering a renewable alternative to fossil fuels (Frontiers).
Construction
In regards to our cities, where we live and how we build those places, seaweed extracts have been demonstrated as an eco-friendly building material, helping to insulate our buildings, regulate internal climates and more. These materials offer sustainable options for construction, helping reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional building methods (The Nature Conservancy).
Plastics
A subset with huge potential, numerous groups around the world are developing seaweed to be used as bio-plastics, which require fewer emissions to produce and are biodegradable, unlike conventional plastics. Seaweed-based bioplastics provide a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics, reducing pollution and environmental damage (The Nature Conservancy) (BCG Global).
Livestock
With animal and livestock emissions contributing anywhere from 11-17% of global carbon emissions, many groups have set out to address this issue. A number of startups and businesses around the world have begun utilizing seaweed within animal feed. Adding seaweed to animal feed has shown to significantly reduce methane emissions from livestock. Research estimates that incorporating seaweed into cattle feed can cut methane emissions by up to 82%, making it a powerful tool for reducing greenhouse gasses (The Nature Conservancy).

Our launch will focus on establishing our business entity and licenses, securing initial partnerships with marine agriculture stakeholders, while debuting our waitlist signup campaign and finishing development of the Wavestock platform.
Farm Development
Our team will be in the Northeast part of the US, onboarding our initial group of farms and helping to list them on our platform. Our beta platform will launch, allowing users on our waitlist to support these farms and acquire some of the first ocean backed securities in the world
Expanding Locations
Our team will work on expanding the number of locations for our farms, making new locations available on our platform for users to support. As new securities go live on our platform during this period, we are planning to enable peer to peer trading.
Initial Returns
After the harvest months, we will be focused on issuing the initial returns to early security holders. Ground work will begin to help establish our platform in existing markets outside of the US and greatly scale the number of contracts on our platform. Our media and farm tracking features will be live, allowing users more insight into each farm on our platform and their performance.
